Janie's Wedding Dress Design Was Featured in D Magazine...

Janie Stidham, Associate Professor and Fashion Design Program Coordinator designed a wedding gown which was featured in the "D Weddings" magazine Fall 2008 issue. Dr. Stidham created this contemporary bridal gown for a non-traditional summer wedding that would take place in an outdoor garden setting in Alaska. The design was intended to feel regionally appropriate and unique in design. Images and illustrations from Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairytale "The Snow Queen" were used to inspire the design and aesthetics of the gown. Illustrations of the snow queen in the fairytale show her in a gown with glistening layers of a beaded fabric and an elaborate opalescent long fur cape. A combination of textures through the use of silk, sheers, beads, yarns, and ribbons were combined to create a similar feeling in this wedding gown with handmade fur. It is in the Fall 2008 issue of D Weddings (a D magazine publication). Visit the link below for more details.

This gown was also selected to be part of the International Textile and Apparel Association Mounted Exhibition in Schaumburg, Illinois on November 7th.

Melanie Carrico, MFA in Fashion Design 1995

Melanie Carrico, '95 MFA in Fashion Design, received “Lectra Innovation Award for Teaching” on November 6th in the International Textile and Apparel Association annual conference in Schaumburg, Illinois. Melanie and co-authored Ann Ramsey submitted the creative teaching paper titled “Design Principles and Aesthetics: hybrid course using technology tools”.
Melanie dictates that the hybrid format incorporated many different ways for students to learn; thus appealing to the variety of learning styles within their population. The blended nature of the course meant that students had the opportunity to take a more proactive position in facilitating their own knowledge of design principles by hands-on experience with technology. Tools such as StudyMate®, ElementK®, Photostory3®, blogs, and wikis were used as ways to engage students in their learning and facilitate communication for group projects.
Currently Melanie is Associate Professor teaching at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Congratulations to Melanie.

Charity Fashion Show - by Stephanie Montes

Each year students and amateur designers across Texas submit portfolios to the Heart House Emerging Designer Contest.

Stephanie Montes, a senior in the fashion design program, was chosen to be one of the two up and coming designers for the event. The annual fashion show was held at Austin Music Hall, Austin, TX on August 23, 2008.

Photos of her collection which included 15 ensembles and an auction item.

The event raised $80,000 to support the expansion of Heart House afterschool centers, where children receive a free, safe and academically focused afterschool program. With an audience of 600 attendees, and a tremendous media sponsorship engagement with Austin Monthly Magazine that sponsored the VIP after party, the event was called the premier fashion show of the season.

“I consider the entire experience my version of an internship. Instead of spending time in an office, I was able to see what it would be like to work on my own, as a freelance designer.” -S.Montes

"Ribbon Dance", summer 08' by Li-Fen Anny Chang

This cocktail dress was inspired by the designer’s interpretation of the flow and softness of tissue paper. The folding of the “ribbons” (created by sewing two tones of silk charmeuse together) were artfully folded and tied to create highlights of the design. Photos were taken by Li Fan.

"Moroccan Dream" by Marian O'Rourke-Kaplan

The Fashion Design Faculty have been very busy this summer. Janie, Marian and Anny have all created designs for a Threads Magazine sponsored design competition. Moroccan Dream is Marian's creation from foulard Silk purchased in NYC while directing the maymester tour. Combined with 2 colors of Silk chiffon and 2 color of silk charmeuse its skirt drape converts to a capelet for those breezy desert nights of Morocco! You see it here modeled by our very own Nikki!
Ask Anny and Janie to show you theirs on the blog as well!!
